Battery-Grade Cobalt Sulfate for Cathode Production
Cobalt sulfate heptahydrate (CoSO₄·7H₂O) is a key precursor for lithium-ion battery cathodes, particularly NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) and NCA (nickel cobalt aluminium) chemistries used in electric vehicles, energy storage systems and consumer electronics. In cathode production it is dissolved and co-precipitated with nickel and manganese salts to form the precursor that becomes the finished cathode material.
Cavin Resources supplies battery-grade cobalt sulfate to cathode precursor producers, battery material manufacturers and chemical traders.
Applications of cobalt sulfate
- Battery cathode precursors – NMC and NCA pCAM production for EV and energy storage batteries.
- Electroplating – cobalt and cobalt alloy plating baths.
- Pigments and ceramics – cobalt colourants and glazes.
- Catalysts and chemicals – feedstock for other cobalt compounds.
- Animal nutrition – feed grades are a separate specification; ask if you need feed grade.
Typical specifications
- Chemical formula: CoSO₄·7H₂O
- Grade: battery grade, ultra-low impurity levels
- Cobalt content: typically about 20.5% min for the heptahydrate
- Appearance: red to pink crystals
- Critical impurities (Fe, Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni, Ca, Mg, Na): controlled to battery-grade limits; confirm on the lot COA
Battery customers usually qualify material against their own specification. Send us your spec and we will confirm whether a matching lot is available and provide the COA.
Handling and safety
Cobalt sulfate is classified as hazardous. It can cause skin and respiratory sensitisation and is a suspected carcinogen. Handle with gloves, eye protection and dust control, store sealed in a dry area, and follow the SDS supplied with each shipment.
Cobalt sulfate pricing is highly volatile and closely tied to cobalt metal and DRC export policy. The reference price shown is based on recent published China market index data and can move significantly week to week – always request a live quote before committing to volume, and confirm your operation’s import/handling documentation requirements for this material.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between battery-grade and industrial cobalt sulfate?
Battery grade has much tighter limits on metallic impurities, which affect cathode performance and safety. Industrial grades are used for plating, pigments and chemicals.
Why does the price change so often?
Cobalt prices follow the cobalt metal market and supply policy in producing countries, so quotes are valid only for a short period.
