Copper sulphate for mineral flotation

Copper Sulphate in Flotation: Activator Chemistry Explained

Activators vs. Collectors: A Quick Distinction

It’s easy to lump all flotation reagents together, but activators and collectors do different jobs. Collectors make a mineral surface hydrophobic; activators like copper sulphate modify a mineral surface so a collector can actually attach to it in the first place. Without the right activator, some minerals simply won’t respond to collector addition.

The Classic Use Case: Activating Sphalerite

Copper sulphate’s best-known role is activating sphalerite (zinc sulfide) for flotation with xanthate collectors. Copper ions from the reagent adsorb onto the sphalerite surface, effectively giving it a copper-like surface chemistry that xanthate collectors can then attach to. This is what makes zinc flotation practical in many polymetallic operations.

Sequencing and Dosage Timing

Activator performance is sensitive to where in the reagent addition sequence it’s introduced, and how much time is allowed for the surface reaction to occur before collector addition. Adding copper sulphate too late, or without adequate conditioning time, is a common reason activation underperforms even at seemingly adequate dosage.

Interactions With Depressants

Because copper sulphate activation can inadvertently affect minerals you’re trying to depress elsewhere in the circuit, its dosage needs to be considered alongside your depressant strategy — not tuned in isolation. This is a case where changing one reagent often means re-checking several others.
