Hydrogen peroxide for mineral processing

Hydrogen Peroxide in Mineral Processing: Applications and Considerations

An Oxidizer That Shows Up in More Places Than Expected

Hydrogen peroxide has a reputation as a household disinfectant, but in mineral processing it plays a very different role: a controllable, relatively clean-decomposing oxidizing agent. Because it breaks down primarily into water and oxygen, it’s often considered where process designers want oxidation without introducing persistent byproducts — though that doesn’t remove the handling hazards of the concentrated product.

Where It Gets Used

In mineral processing, hydrogen peroxide may be evaluated for oxidation stages, process-water treatment, and selected wastewater treatment applications. In gold and precious-metal circuits specifically, its role is usually narrower and more situational — it is not a drop-in substitute for established leaching reagents, and its suitability depends heavily on ore mineralogy and circuit design.

Concentration and Grade Matter

Commercial hydrogen peroxide comes in a range of concentrations, and the right one for a given process depends on the required oxidation strength, transport regulations, and downstream handling capability at your site. Higher concentrations increase both reactivity and hazard, so this isn’t a spec to guess at.

Handling Realities

Because it’s a strong oxidizer, hydrogen peroxide needs to be stored in approved containers, kept away from contamination and incompatible materials, and handled according to its SDS and local dangerous-goods regulations. Decomposition releases oxygen, which has implications for container venting and storage design that shouldn’t be treated as an afterthought.

Questions Worth Asking Your Supplier

  • What concentration and stabilizer package does this batch use?
  • Can you provide a current COA alongside the TDS and SDS?
  • What packaging (drums, IBC, bulk tanker) fits our order volume and transport route?
  • What is the expected shelf life under our storage conditions?

If hydrogen peroxide is part of your process evaluation, we can help match concentration, grade and documentation to your specific application.
